The Eye of Saint Lucia, sometimes also called Eye of Venus, Eye of the Virgin or Eye of Shiva, is a fossilized shell of gastropod with a perfect spiral. It is a lucky charm common in the Mediterranean but also in the East.
Several legends tell the origin of these benevolent eyes, one of them being that of Lucia who dedicates herself to the Blessed Virgin and who tears out her eyes and throws them into the sea so as not to be diverted from her faith. The Virgin would have given her back her sight with even more beautiful and white eyes.
