The medal bears the inscriptions “St. Cornelius” and “OPN,” which stands for “Ora Pro Nobis,” meaning “Pray for Us.” He is a Christian saint who served as pope between 251 and 253. He was known for his leniency toward Christians who repented after the Roman persecutions. He is celebrated on September 14 by the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Saint Cornelius is recognized by his episcopal or pontifical vestments and his hunting horn. In northern France, he is the patron saint of small children.
