Twelve-year-old Trey Caldwell is devastated by the death of his father, a soldier killed in Afghanistan. He left him an unfinished soapbox. This "gift," however, is above all a painful reminder of what they could have experienced together. When Trey meets Roy Gibbs, a fire captain deeply affected by the loss of his son, who died on September 11, 2001, a completely new and different relationship develops between them. The two friends' old wounds begin to heal. The small team they form plans to complete the "soap box" and prepare it for a renowned race (the "Soap Box Derby"). They will then discover that real life isn't about successfully crossing the finish line, but about remaining courageous and living by faith.
