The Perfect Wave is inspired by the true story of Ian McCormack, who grew up surfing the waters of New Zealand. Ian sets off on a journey with his best friends in search of the perfect wave. Traveling across Australia, Southeast Asia, and Africa, they surf incredible waves and enjoy a life filled with travel, parties, and adventure. When Ian meets Annabel, a beautiful and kind soul, he falls in love and soon abandons his friends. When jealousy overtakes their love, Ian pursues Annabel to Mauritius in an attempt to win her back.

In Mauritius, Ian learns that his brother is getting married and decides to return for the ceremony. The day before his departure, he goes night diving with his local fishing friends. In the dark waters of the reef, Ian is stung by a pod of deadly box jellyfish, whose venom is so virulent that a single sting can kill. Abandoned on the shore by a frightened fisherman's son, Ian must plead and beg for help to reach the hospital. In the ambulance, he cries out to God. At the hospital, Ian is quickly pronounced dead and taken to the morgue. He finds himself outside his own body, plunged into complete darkness, in a cold and strange place. As he struggles to understand what happened, he is lifted out of the darkness by a wave of perfect light, rising to the sky. Ian experiences wave after wave of love and finds himself in the presence of God, where he has the choice to stay or return. What will he decide…
