Statue of Saint Matthew - Wooden Craft - 14 cm

This handcrafted wooden statue of the Apostle Saint Matthew, or Matthew-Levi, is sculpted and hand-painted. The delicate details of this statue bring the figure to life. Saint Matthew is depicted wearing flowing garments and a cape billowing in the wind. He holds a book in one hand, a symbol of the Gospel, which he points to. The inside of his cloak is painted gold, enhancing the colors of the saintly figure.

According to historians, it is unlikely that the Apostle Saint Matthew wrote the Gospel. The Gospel was compiled in the 80s, based on the Gospel of Mark, to which the sayings of Jesus, called Logia, were added. Tradition, however, holds that this Gospel was written by the Apostle.

This statue of Saint Matthew is a handcrafted piece ideal for a devotional altar or as a spiritual gift for someone working under the saint's protection. He is the patron saint of tax inspectors, bankers, bank employees, accountants, customs officers, and toll collectors.

He is celebrated on September 21 for Catholics and on November 16 for Orthodox Christians.
