Rare antique wooden sculpture depicting Christ on the Cross, attributed to the Antwerp sculptor Walther Pompe (1703–1777). The work stands out for its refined craftsmanship and the expressive strength of the figure.

The body is harmoniously proportioned, with a finely modelled, naturalistic anatomy that conveys suffering with restraint and dignity. The inclined head, the solemn yet gentle facial expression, and the carefully carved perizoma give the sculpture a powerful emotional presence.

 

A fine example of 18th-century Antwerp religious sculpture, renowned for its balance between Baroque expressiveness and classical sobriety. Both an object of devotion and a collector’s piece, this sculpture would be well suited to a private collection, a specialised gallery, or an elegant interior.
